About Niwaro Balcony Zen
Located in Osaka, where traditional design meets modern urban living, Niwaro Balcony Zen emerged from an understanding that small spaces can benefit from thoughtful design, regardless of their size.
Our Story
Founded by Kenji Nakamura, a third-generation garden designer, Niwaro Balcony Zen developed from studying how traditional Japanese garden principles might be adapted for contemporary urban living. Observing city dwellers seeking natural elements in their environments, Kenji focused on creating accessible zen-inspired solutions.
Our journey began in 2019 when Kenji collaborated with craftsman Hiroshi Tanaka to create the first compact zen garden kit. What started as a personal project for friends gradually expanded as interest grew in these miniature landscapes designed for small spaces.
Our Mission
To make Japanese zen garden design principles accessible to urban dwellers regardless of space constraints. We believe that connection with natural elements can be valuable for city living, not limited to those with large homes.
Through thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and modern tools like our AR planning application, we connect traditional aesthetics with contemporary living. Our focus extends beyond product sales – we aim to support urban residents interested in creating personal quiet spaces.
Artisan Partnerships & Quality Craftsmanship
Our network of artisans brings over 200 years of combined experience in traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Each partner is selected for their technical skill and understanding of zen design principles and material application.
From Hiroshi Tanaka's hand-carved stone lanterns that have been featured in temple gardens, to Yuki Sato's weatherproof tatami that maintains traditional aesthetics while incorporating modern durability, each piece reflects dedication to quality craftsmanship.
We maintain quality standards while respecting traditional methods, ensuring that each item meets contemporary performance expectations while preserving the aesthetic elements that characterize Japanese design.
Technology Meets Traditional Design
While rooted in traditional design, we incorporate technology to make zen garden planning more accessible. Our AR planning application allows customers to visualize potential arrangements in their space before making decisions, helping align expectations with available area.
We've developed space-efficient designs that incorporate key principles of Japanese garden philosophy – asymmetry, simplicity, and natural materials – while adapting to the constraints of modern balcony living. This approach makes it possible for apartment dwellers to explore zen garden elements in their available space.
